The Battle of Cheat Mountain was fought in the mountains of West Virginia from September 12-15, 1861 during the American Civil War. Union forces under General William S. Rosecrans successfully defended a key strategic mountain pass against Confederate troops under General Robert E. Lee.
The battle began when Confederate forces attacked a Union camp at the summit of Cheat Mountain, but the Union troops were able to hold them off and force them to withdraw. The Confederates made another attempt to take the pass, but were again unsuccessful due to the difficult terrain and the fortifications built by the Union soldiers.
Despite not being a major battle, the Battle of Cheat Mountain was significant because it prevented the Confederates from gaining control of a crucial transportation route in the Appalachian Mountains. The Union victory also bolstered morale among Union troops and helped to establish General Rosecrans as a capable military commander.
In total, there were around 50 casualties on both sides during the battle. The site of the battle is now part of the Monongahela National Forest and is open to visitors who want to hike the historic battlefield.
